In 1993, Stephanie Sams and Blair Darnell found themselves attending a Corrales Village Council meeting. The agenda item that brought them to the meeting was the widening of Loma Larga and the proposed trail system to follow the road. Perplexed that few other horse owners were in attendance, Stephanie remarked that someone should start a watchdog group to keep track of what happened at village meetings with respect to horse related issues. Blair’s response was, “Then do it.”

For nearly two decades, horse and mule owners in New Mexico have enjoyed some limitations on their liability, provided they post warning signs. CHAMP and other organizations promoted the legislation.

Although CHAMP was not successful in that initial venture, it has grown over the years as a group of concerned equestrians dedicated to preserving, protecting and promoting equestrian activities and the equestrian lifestyle in the Village of Corrales.
CHAMP sponsors several events every year, including an annual Recreation Ride, a Horse Expo during Corrales Harvest Festival, the Corrales Barn Tour, and the Christmas de Caballos Parade.
CHAMP also works with other equine organizations by helping to promote their activities and to provide volunteers for the events those groups hold, such as the annual Ditch Pony Promenade and Lefty Converse Horse Show and the annual Corrales July 4th Parade.
We invite you to join CHAMP and help us preserve and promote life with horses and mules!!
