Bosque Patrol

Several CHAMP members participate in the volunteer Bosque Patrol organized by the Corrales Bosque Advisory Commission and Corrales Fire Department.  During the summer of 2011, the patrol was especially active because the bosque was closed for about a month due to extreme fire danger. Another challenging year is expected in 2012 due to the ongoing drought.

Wearing identification badges and mesh vests, usually green or orange, the members of the patrol visit the bosque on foot, bicycle or horseback to help check for fires and other safety hazards.  The patrol has no law enforcement power.  Members are told to alert the appropriate authorities if they see a hazardous or illegal activity.

The Corrales Fire Department and Corrales Bosque Advisory Commission held an orientation and training session for new and prospective 2012 Bosque Patrol members Saturday, April 28. Additional sessions are planned and volunteers will have to attend only one of them.  Those who have attended the training are beginning their 2012 patrols

The training sessions will include an overview of fire safety and instructions for patrol participants; a review of the village ordinances pertaining to the bosque preserve; and emergency response training.

Lara Aho of the Bosque Commission has asked current members of the patrol who do not plan to continue to notify her and turn in their vests and identification badges.  Otherwise, she has encouraged members of the patrol to watch over their assigned sectors as they have done in the past.

Lara points out that paintball games and bb guns are not permitted in the Corrales Bosque.  Visitors may not post notices such as treasure hunts.  If you see these kinds of activities, please notify the police.  If you see a fire, call 911.

For more information about the bosque patrols, contact Corrales Bosque Advisory Commission Secretary Lara Aho at 919-724-3308 or by email at lara.aho@gmail.com  Please do not contact the village hall or the fire department.
