The Recreation Ride is one of the major events sponsored by CHAMP each year to demonstrate how many people in the community own horses and enjoy riding. The ride also raised money from participants and sponsors for CHAMP projects.
Thirty three CHAMP members and their horses participated in the 2011 Corrales Recreation Ride. We hope to increase that number significantly in 2012.
The 2011 event raised money that was intended to be used for fencing and gates along the Rhythm’s Way easement (left) through Alana McGrattan’s property just south of Meadowlark. However, the Corrales village council has authorized the use of village funds for fencing and gates, so CHAMP funds will be used for installation and maintenance.
Development plans have been approved and CHAMP is working with the Corrales Equestrian Advisory Commission to finalize the easement language and description. The equestrian-only trail, which joins the Main Canal with the Front Ditch, is not yet open to the public, but we intendt to use it again for this year’s Recreation Ride and we hope it will be open to public equestrian use soon.
For the silent auction following the ride, CHAMP member and sponsor Mike Sikorski has donated a Bowman roper saddle, rought out, barb wire tooling, full QH tree, 15 1/2 " seat with a 5" straight back cantel. Stirrups are extra large for big feet - they are 5" wide X 4" deep X 6" high. It includes a breast collar. New it would have sold for $650 - $750.
CHAMP members who have other items to donate to the annual Recreation Ride silent auction should contact Steve Henry at stevehenryesq@aol.com. CHAMP members willing to volunteer to help with the ride without participating should contact Steve Komadina at komadina@stevekomadina.com.
