Trails
Members of CHAMP engage in a wide range of equestian activities. One of the most popular is trail riding. CHAMP stages at least one Corrales Recreation Ride each year. Throughout the year, CHAMP members informally ride the trails inside the village. The Corrales Bosque Preserve presents a unique opportunity for casual trail riding. So do the ditchbanks maintained for irrigation purposes by the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District.

In the past, CHAMP has prepared a map of some of the more popular equestrian trails in the village (left) and the map is included in the villlage’s trail master plan. Although the map is helpful, it requires considerable existing knowledge of the village geography to order to interpret the trails. In 2012, CHAMP’s Steve Komadina is undertaking an update of the map, including an easier-to-use trail guide. If you would like to help, give Steve a call at 328-4696.
The Village of Corrales has expressed interest in acquiring land or easements for additional trails. One pending project, for example, is an equestrian easement just south of Meadowlark Road called Rhythm’s Way that would provide an west-east connection between the Corrales main acequia and the front ditch . Although the easement has been used for two of the last three CHAMP Recreation Rides, it is still not open to the public because of protracted legal proceedings. When all the legal requirements have been satisfied,, CHAMP has pledged some of the proceeds from its recent Recreation Rides to install appropriate fencing and gates and to provide regular maintenance.
Some CHAMP members also participate in trail rides elsewhere in New Mexico and in the western United States. CHAMP trail riders maintain a Facebook page with the latest information about trail riding, including photos of some of their recent rides. Check events for the next pot luck meeting of the CHAMP trail riders. Any CHAMP member is welcome.
Several CHAMP members also take part in competitive trail riding. The American Competitive Trail Horse Association sanctions regular events in and around New Mexico.
We’ll see you on the trail!
